Why you do what you do

Before you can change behavior, you need to understand the reasons behind your actions. This is the second step in Acting.

The ABC model is a helpful tool for figuring out why you do what you do.

A = Activator
B = Behavior
C = Consequences

An Activator directs a Behavior that leads to a Consequence that supports the behavior.

Example:

Activator: Your boss tells you to be careful.
Behavior: You wear eye protection while splitting wood.
Consequence: You finish the task without an eye injury, but experience discomfort from the safety glasses pressing into the side of your head.

Consequences can cause you to change a behavior or repeat it. Will you wear safety glasses next time?
